Development: Audience feeback ancillary tasks

Since finishing the production of my ancillary texts, I decided to ask someone who fitted the target audience that I was trying to attract what they thought about the final versions. Above, I have print screened the comments she had to say about the texts. The audience feedback informed me that I have attracted my intended target audience of teens whom are interested in the rock/pop genre through my use of creative designs and use of conventions of real media texts. I have used the new technology of Facebook in this instance, because of the easy access that it grants me, as my intended target audience often visit the social netwoking page.

At the beginning of the project, I initially planned to create a more conventional designed digi-pak
shown in my drafts here, however after doing some research into different designs and layouts, I decided to create a more untconventional digi-pak than the ones seen in shelves of music stores. The DVD works like a booklet which all folds in together, the design is easy and uses less packaging that other designs seen in music stores. The design in captivating to my audience as it's fairly unsusual, coupled with the bright colours makes it appealing all the more.

I have incorporated the motif of polaroids throughout all of the ancillary products, this is where I felt the polaroids have worked the most effectively as it ties in the photography with the layout really well.

Development: Ancillary task: Magazine advertisement

Ancillary text: Magazine advertisment promoting the album

This is final version of one of my ancillary products which I am thoroughly happy with. I believe I have incorporated as many codes and conventions of magazine advertisements whilst still being visually appealing and not too over the top. I have used a brick work image for the background which I imported from Google which adds an eye catching effect to the product, it also adds to the grungy rock feel that I was aiming for.

The imagery is captivating to my targeted audience through the colours and layout of the images, especially using the polaroids as a motif throughout.

I have incorporated the contact details for the bands social pages such as their twitter and facebook pages in which many teens often look at as well as their website. I also added HMV and iTunes logos to promote where the album can be bought from which I found from research was a common code and convention.

Development: Ancillary tasks: Tour poster

Ancillary text: Tour poster

I have finished my final ancillary version of my tour poster for the bands tour which would be ideally slotted into the digi-pak as a souvenir item taken away from the tour. I created this in addition to my other ancillary products, as I felt it complimented the products well.

I have subverted the conventions of real media texs of posters by chosing to create a landscape poster, however because this specific product isn't advertising the tour specifically and is only a souvenir product, I feel that it works well in that context.

I have included the colour scheme, logo, fonts, sponsors and record label logo which all follow the codes and conventions of real media products. I am happy with the overall product and believe that it is visually appealing to my target audience.

Evaluation: Audience feedback for final video

Throughout this project, I have really understood the importance of audience feedback in relation to the product and how it helps to progress the production further. After finally finishing the music video, we showed our finished video to year 10 and year 11 media students at our school whom sat and watched the video and filled out sheets giving feedback. Questions that we asked the pupils included: ‘was the constructed mise-en-scene effective?’; ‘was the target audience catered for?’; ‘did you enjoy it?’. The pupils also noted their age and gender which gave us an insight into whether or not we had targeted our audience in the appropriate fashion effectively.

Male / 16
+ Splitscreen
+ Similar to a real music video
– Unclear narrative at times
+ Appeals to teenagers of either gender

Male / 16
+ Narrative is open – the stalker could be an alter ego?
+ Understood narrative

Female / 16
+ Good song choice

Male / 15
- Too many burning photos

Male / 15
+ Abstract narrative
+ Good lip-synching

Female / 16
+ Appeals to target audience (teens); I enjoyed it

Male / 15
+ Good lip-synching
- ‘Headbanging’ is ‘cringey’
+ Feels like an original music video

Male / 15
+ Good lighting
+ Good setting

Female / 15
- Too horrifying for kids
+ Good mise-en-scene

Male / 16
+ Crossfade worked well with story

Male / 16
+ Lighting and flashing images were effective

Female / 15
+ Paint on wall is good
+ Characters and costume suit song
+ Words in song relate to shots
- Some scenes could be longer

From the results that were gained from the audience feedback sheets, it can be seen that the video has been perceived positively by teenagers, whom were targeted in the music video. The mise-en-scene was commented on by the teenagers positively, noticing that the characters and costumes suit the song genre.

Ancillary task: Magazine advertisement

Whilst still in the production of the Paramore music video, I decided to start the production of one of my andcillary task products; magazine advertisement for the album. I produced the advertisement in Adobe Photoshop which gave me full creative control in the layout.

First draft
Here is the first draft in which I created, however when I showed it to my peers, it was pointed out to me that the orientation of the product wasn't conventional to the media text. Magazine advertisements are normally portrait especially when advertising albums, therefore this lead me to my second draft below.
Second draft

I amended the orientation of my product to portrait which conformed to common conventions of magazine advertisements. I then added the logos of the social networking pages to make the pages more noticeable.
Third Draft

This is my final version for my magazine advertisment.
